Let's Talk About the Book!

One of my favorite parts of writing Bicentennial Summer has been connecting with readers and hearing what they think about the book.

I'd love to join your book club—in person or virtually—to talk about the characters, the real-life adventures that inspired the novel, and what happened behind the scenes.

Have questions about the book? Planning a literary event?

Music, especially brass instruments, plays a big role in Mary’s life. In Bicentennial Summer, music is more than just background—it’s a form of connection, escape, and self-expression for Mary. Songs on the radio, catchy commercial jingles, and the sounds of the 1976 Bicentennial celebrations all help ground the story in its time. How do these musical and pop culture references shape Mary’s experience and emotional journey? Did any of the songs or cultural moments mentioned in the book spark memories or emotions from your own life?

10. Memoir vs. Fiction
